The SBDC Helps Restaurant Owner Save 74 Jobs During COVID-19 Disaster
Charles Felts, a restaurant owner, suffered a tremendous downturn in revenue resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and asked his SBDC advisor, Herbert Hildebrand of San Jacinto SBDC, for assistance in obtaining financial relief from the Restaurant Revitalization Fund (RRF). Herb reviewed all documentation requested from and provided by Charles necessary for RRF relief and assisted Charles in preparing and submitting his RRF application. With Herb’s help, Hidden Lake Restaurant Group, Inc. received $802,000 in RRF funds and, has been able to maintain it operations with 74 jobs saved.

A mismatch of physical address caused their initial SBA EIDL request to be declined, but with the help of the SBDC to research the issue, owner Normalinda Ortiz was able to reapply and secure funding. The resourceful entrepreneur also pivoted to customize masks, which has helped them "weather the business storm" of a hurricane during a pandemic!

American Shakespeare Center rebounded from its shut down and gave 80 performances to 10,000 people
Like the rest of Virginia, Staunton’s American Shakespeare Center (ASC) shut down in mid-March 2020. ASC turned to their local SBDC and, with their help, received PPP loans and a Shuttered Venue Operators Grant. ASC was then able to get in-person productions up and running again. The head of infectious diseases at the local hospital, a big ACS fan, figured out how to make the productions as safe as possible. “Without a doubt, we would recommend the SBDC,” Amy Wratchford commented. “COVID brought us to the SBDC, but now that we know about the services they offer, we’re excited about working with them in the future.”
